General

Do I need any prior experience?

No — we offer beginner classes for both youth and adults with no prior knowledge required.

What ages are the youth classes for?

Our youth program serves students ages 6–17, grouped by age and skill level.

How long is each session?

Classes typically run 60–90 minutes, once or twice per week depending on the program.

What is DGERT?

DGERT (Direção-Geral do Emprego e das Relações de Trabalho) is the Portuguese government agency that certifies training entities. A DGERT-certified instructor has met Portugal's official standards for professional teaching qualifications.

What is SIGO?

SIGO (Sistema de Informação e Gestão da Oferta Educativa e Formativa) is Portugal's official information system for managing educational and training programs. Being registered in SIGO means a course is officially recognized by the Portuguese government.

What is CIPLE?

CIPLE (Certificado Inicial de Português Língua Estrangeira) is the A2-level Portuguese language proficiency exam. It is commonly required for Portuguese citizenship applications and proof of permanent residence. The exam tests listening, reading, writing, and speaking skills.

Youth Programs

What Portuguese programs do you offer for children and teens?

We offer two Youth Programs designed to support students at different stages of their Portuguese language journey:

  • PLE — Portuguese as a Foreign Language
  • PLH — Portuguese as a Heritage Language

Our students range from A1 (Beginner) to B2 (High Intermediate/Advanced) levels.

What is PLE?

PLE (Portuguese as a Foreign Language) is designed for students who have no knowledge of the Portuguese language or use only a few words and expressions in Portuguese.

What is PLH?

PLH (Portuguese as a Heritage Language) is designed for students who already speak Portuguese with some or strong fluency and wish to strengthen their literacy skills while deepening their connection to Portuguese language and culture.

How are students placed?

Students are placed according to age and proficiency level. New students may complete a brief informal assessment to ensure appropriate placement.

Schedule & School Year

When are Youth classes offered?
  • PLE classes are offered in person on Saturday mornings or online during the week
  • PLH classes are offered in person on Saturdays and virtually

Classes are complemented by enrichment activities and cultural events throughout the year.

When does the school year end for the youth classes?

Our school year begins in October and runs through mid-June.

Do you offer Portuguese classes for adults?

Yes! Our online European Portuguese programs are designed for adults who want to learn for citizenship, heritage, travel, or work. Flexible schedules and personalized support make it easy to fit learning into your life.

What adult class options are available?

We offer three flexible formats, all taught by a DGERT-certified instructor based in Portugal:

  • Self-Paced Online: JÁ ESTÁ!® (A1/A2) — Study at your own pace with structured lessons and exercises.
  • Virtual Group Classes (Beginner → Advanced) — Live online in small, supportive groups.
  • Virtual 1:1 Lessons — Personalized lessons for your goals and schedule.

Tuition & Enrollment

What is the annual tuition for the Youth classes?

The tuition for the academic year is $800.

What does tuition include?

Tuition includes:

  • Enrollment fees
  • Textbooks
  • A digital license to Escola Virtual
  • Participation in social and cultural events throughout the year
Is there a sibling discount?

Yes. We offer a 10% discount for families enrolling three or more children.

What are the next steps after we express interest? (Youth Classes)

The enrollment process includes the following steps:

  1. Fill out our interest form to get started.
  2. Schedule a phone call to discuss class options and answer any questions about our school.
  3. Schedule a Zoom meeting to assess your child's proficiency level and ensure appropriate placement.
  4. Complete the Registration Form and submit tuition payment.
Do you offer scholarships?

Yes. Scholarships are available. Please contact us for more information about eligibility and the application process.

CIPLE Exam

Do you offer preparation for the CIPLE exam?

Yes! Our CIPLE Exam Preparation Course helps you pass the A2 exam required for Portuguese citizenship or permanent residence.

  • Practice listening, speaking, writing, and grammar
  • Learn test strategies and exam structure
  • Exam locations include Boston (May, July, November)
  • Build confidence and feel fully prepared

Format & Scheduling

Are classes in person?

No. All adult classes are 100% online, available as group sessions or private lessons, so you can learn from anywhere.
